Looking for more? Discover the best Christmas songs of all time. As film director Peter Bogdanovich said: “That Dean Martin died on Christmas Day was the kind of black joke he might have made.” Martin’s spirit lives on, however, and Christmas would not be the same without the famous crooner singing “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” Oh, the weather outside is frightful But the fire is so delightful And since weve no place to go Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow Man, it doesnt show signs of stopping And I brought me some corn for popping The lights are turned way down low Let it snow, let it snow When we finally kiss good night How Ill hate going out in the storm But. The singer was 78 when he died, on December 25, 1995, of acute respiratory failure, at his home in Beverly Hills. It is hard to beat that 1959 version, though. Martin liked it so much, he re-recorded a version in 1966, as part of The Dean Martin Christmas Album. Among the different takes are those by Kate Rusby (folk), Louie Bellson (jazz), Aaron Neville (soul), Randy Travis (country), Twisted Sister (heavy metal), Jeremih and Chance The Rapper (hip-hop) and Michael Bublé (pop). 1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart in December that same year.Ĭahn and Styne’s song is so iconic that it can be interpreted in a variety of styles. Stewart, meanwhile, recorded “Let It Snow” on his 2012 album, Merry Christmas, Baby. 6 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Let It Snow It was written in Hollywood, California during a heat wave as Cahn and Styne imagined cooler conditions. His 1959 recording is the latest in a series of classic holiday tunes to receive a new music video treatment for the festive season, created in 2019 by animation studio Fantoons.Ĭarly Simon and Rod Stewart have also recorded successful versions of “Let It Snow” Simon’s 2005 take on the song is unusual in being sung from the point of view of the host instead of the guest. But it is Martin’s version, which was arranged by Gus Levene and conducted by Hy Lesnick, that became a festive classic. The song was first recorded for RCA Victor in 1945 by Vaughn Monroe, and versions by Woody Herman and Connee Boswell soon followed. ‘Oh, the weather outside is frightful/But the fire is so delightful/And since we’ve got no place to go/Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.’ Now why three ‘Let it snow’s? Why not two or four? Because three is lyric.” The many versions of Let It Snow! He said, ‘Why don’t we stay here and write a winter song.’ I went to the typewriter. In the book Songwriters On Songwriting, Cahn recalled how the famous tune came about: “‘Why don’t we go down to the beach and cool off?’ I asked Jule. He won four Oscars: for “Three Coins In The Fountain,” written for the 1954 film of the same title “All the Way,” written for the film The Joker Is Wild “High Hopes,” from A Hole In The Head and “Call Me Irresponsible,” from the film Papa’s Delicate Condition.Īll those Academy winners pale in comparison, however, to the long-term success of “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” which was penned in sunny California. Lyricist Cahn and composer Styne were two of the greatest songwriters of that golden age of popular music: at his peak, Cahn was reportedly America’s highest-paid songwriter, often earning more than $1,000 a word. At the price point, this is a very well-built addition to any family's travel arsenal. Now, please just teach your kids proper etiquette so they don't grow up to be a 26-year-old airport menace.Scoring: Each category is scored between 1 and 10 for a maximum score of 50. Don't expect this to be your kids' main piece of luggage. It's a kids' carry-on and is perfect to hold toys and books and other travel distractions. The scooter held up nicely with about a mile worth of usage during our travels through three different airports. All in all, it weighs 7.9 pounds. My 7-year-old son Jake (shown here in early-morning, trying-too-hard-to-look-awake mode) tested out his happy face design scooter on our recent father-son outing to Cancun. But outfitters from low-end to Kenneth Cole have created these multi-use machines. And yes, earlier this year, while pausing to get my boarding pass at JFK Airport, I was plowed down by a scarf-wearing-in-90-degree-heat, ponytailed, George Michael-bearded 20-something.Not exactly selling this concept so far, right? While I might not endorse them for "adults" (the 26-year-old guy that hit me begged me not to file an insurance claim because his parents would take him off the policy), if the power is harnessed correctly, they can be the perfect combination of utility and wonderful toy distraction for your kids.Case in point: the Scootie from America's Travel Marketplace (ATM, $89.99, ).The mobile luggage was created for kids ages 4-9 and comes in a variety of designs, including a number of Nickelodeon characters like Spongebob, Paw Patrol, Dora the Explorer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The interior comes in carry-on approved dimensions of 16 by 12 by 10 inches and is made of a material harder than a typical backpack but not a full-on hard case. The scooter component folds out to non-slip deck that is 3.5 inches wide by 14 inches long with a rear-fender brake. The T-bar handle adjusts for different heights and the scooter folds up with the tug of a nylon strap and attaches to the luggage with the help of an additional safety bracket. How about a piece of luggage that doubles as a scooter?Part of me closes my eyes and imagines a sea of millennials and hipsters clogging up the terminal walkways, and that's a nightmare. So in the meantime, let's dial back the tech a bit. The Modobag is a reality, but months away from the first generation of airport riders. But take a look at a few episodes of The Jetsons and you'll see that many of the "that would be cool but will never happen" ideas of decades ago are now a reality. The latest hubbub we're hearing has to do with luggage you can drive through the airport. There has been a bunch of innovation in the travel tech space that was once considered to be far-fetched Jetsons type thinking. I was the same dude tried no mans sky several times over the years and normally only made it a few hours but a month or so ago I started again and fell in love. I can't say I recommend it as strongly as the other three. The fighting was about on par with Wasteland III and it's nicer to look at. The combat of Planetfall is solid mechanically but too board gamey/4X for me. The only game I've gotten seriously into lately. There's a lot of exploring a medieval map with more scraping for survival involved. It has what I consider solid tactical combat, with some battlefield control and elementals, but limited abilities and no magic. If you want something newer, Wartales is in early access right now. The devs have other similar games I haven't played like Voidspire Tactics. If you like it you can spend lots of time in it, I played 75 hours and I didn't even add any of the mods with free extra content. It's pixely and 2D and you will spend most of your time sailing and doing explorer merchant stuff. Horizon's Gate offers tons more classes and creative possibilities than Fort Triumph. Short and approachable, I'd recommend to anyone. Focus on attacks that move the enemies into traps with ally reactions. Unfortunately these do not have handcrafted battles they're generated.įort Triumph is a mostly combat fantasy adventure where the focus is setting up combos like dominoes. These games have enemy push/pull (no teleport,) fire and poison on the ground, and one thing DOS2 was short on: reactions. Here are a few that are different from the ones usually mentioned. I think once Baldur's Gate 3 is polished it will be the next DOS2 since it is literally the same engine but otherwise companies are still trying to figure out the Larian Studio's formulae before we eventually get a worthy clone. However, I will say that your search for a DOS2 like game is still 2-3 years off. The other CRPGs that I have since played and listed are all absolutely fantastic and honestly the depth of these games trumps DOS2. That being said, I don't think you should feel discouraged. The momentum is just not the same because it is much easier to absorb and enjoy concepts like big red lizard man want throne, freeze the water to make ice and save a dog's friend that's being forced to enjoy human flesh. In the end, you have to "Learn" many CRPGs and let the world grown on you instead of the DOS2's experience of being whisked into an adventure in an ambiguous land with characters that have easy to understand motivations. This is the same with gameplay, Pathfinder and Solasta literally requires you to learn D20 DND mechanics because all the powers and classes have to fit the lore, meaning you have to deal with mountainous amount of text just to figure out why you missed an attack and the lack of mobility spells since positioning is much more important due to Attack of Opportunity rolls and exhaustion that tie into the resting mechanics. You end up having to buy in and almost study the story before you can properly appreciate the way the towns and zones are laid out. Whereas for games like POE and Wasteland, the world is more meticulous about it's lore and towns. Despite the fantasy elements, DOS2 is quintessentially just medieval times making it a very blank canvas for story telling. The main problem is that most CRPGs are way too niche and "nerd-like". So trust me when I say this, at the moment nothing compares with DOS2. Since DOS2, I have completed POE, Wasteland, Pathfinder, Dragon Age, Solasta, Baldur's Gate, Disco Elysium, Shadowrun, Tyranny plus a few more that I probably overlooked. I have since spent hundreds of dollars and hours trying to find the same experience. Oh man, I was in your situation too, desperately trying to find the same high of DOS2 after playing it. I managed to fix it because of this StackOverflow answer. I ran into issues with the custom layout reverting. (I’m not interested in learning a new layout.) Apple doesn’t support that layout by default so I install a custom made one from GitHub. I know that I’m more of an anglophone now, but I’ve been typing on that layout since I’m a kid. Once homebrew installed, I want to install a custom Canadian French keyboard layout. brew install -cask uses the -cask option to specify that we want to install a cask which is a macOS application like Chrome. brew install is the main command for installing anything with homebrew. I’ll be using these commands a lot to install packages and applications. But, before we proceed, I want to go over these two homebrew commands: $ brew install If there are any issues, I fix them right away. Homebrew has a handy diagnostic command you can use to do this. Once homebrew installed, I do a last check to see that everything is ok. This will run you through the installation process. Without it, it would be a lot more complicated and time-consuming to set all this up. I use it to install most of the tools and applications that I use every day. Homebrew is the primary package manager for macOS. (This happened a lot before COVID.) Installing homebrew Another bonus is that I can use this when I’m not working from home. I find this quicker than turning my head to look at an external monitor. For this to work well, I need to disable auto rearranging of spaces so that everything stays in order. I navigate between each space using track pad gestures. I’ve been using six spaces for almost a decade. Instead, I rely on mission control to give each application a dedicated space. I found on StackOverflow that there’s a command you can run to do that: $ defaults write size-immutable -bool no & killall Dock I also like locking the size of the dock. That’s because I’m less likely to mouse over it compared to if it was at the bottom or left of the screen. That said, having it on the right is still useful. There’s no more gap in the newer macOS versions. (Navigation and such are always on the left.) When the dock was on the left, I’d look at it a lot because I noticed the gap a lot since a lot of applications are left heavy. There was always a gap to show where the dock was. In older versions, macOS didn’t do a perfect window fullscreen. But, for me, it removed a subtle source of distraction. I can’t remember what prompted me to do it. I also disable badges on most applications.Ī more interesting decision is moving the dock to the right. I do the obvious stuff like shrink it and hide it. I also like to configure my dock so it distracts me as little as possible. It really sticks out when I log in the first time and I see all these dock icons I don’t care about! So I remove most of them. The dock is the first thing that I customize. (If you haven’t met me, I’m pretty hyperactive! This helps me a lot.) Dock I do this to reduce distractions as much as possible. What defines my workspace is that almost every application that I use is full-screen. I change them to match my personal preferences. This means opening System Preferences and going through all the options. Normally, this takes a little while, but there weren’t any updates this time! System preferencesĪfter I’m done with software updates (or while they’re running), I take care of the other boring stuff as well. (Yep, you heard that right!) I click that Apple icon in the upper left and go to Software Update. Once I go through the Apple setup wizard, the first thing that I do is run system updates. With that out of the way, let’s begin setting up this new MacBook Pro! What might be a good fit for me might not be for you. I think it’s useful to know why I picked a tool and which ones I tried. I’ll also discuss why I picked some of these applications. But it’s still worth mentioning because some application recommendations are going to be for macOS applications. This is becoming less of an issue over time as more and more of us work with Apple laptops. It’s also worth pointing out that this is going to be macOS centric. I’m generally happy with my workflow still, so some sections will be copied over and maybe edited slightly. I hope I picked correctly!īecause I already wrote a guide for the 2016 laptop, this guide will be a bit different. I had a lot of anxiety trying to get the right spec for the laptop to have good performance, but also good battery life. Well, the time has come for me to do it again! I just got a new 14 inch MacBook Pro with a M1 Pro processor and 32GB of memory. It’s also an opportunity for me to review the tools that I use and my overall workflow. I found it useful to have some documentation on how I set up my work environment. In 2016, I wrote a guide on how I setup my new MacBook Pro.
